The jump scares are essentially turning the lights on and off. The kills could have been more grotesque but the movie holds back. It lays out the story from the start and walks down the straight forward path. My main problem is that director David Gelb telegraphs every turn this movie takes. These are good actors doing a mediocre little horror. Zoe is accidentally electrocuted and Frank brings her back to life despite everybody's objections. The group sneaks into the lab to continue the research. A large pharmaceutical buys the grant company and confiscates all the research material for breaking the contract.
They break the grant contract by using dead animals instead of coma patients. Eve (Sarah Bolger) is a student videotaping the trials. Clay (Evan Peters) and Niko (Donald Glover) are their assistants. Frank, Zoe and their team take matters into their own hands, launching a rogue attempt to recreate their experiment, during which things go terribly wrong and one of their own, Zoe, is horrifically killed.
When the dean of their university learns of their underground experiments, their project is unexpectedly shut down and their materials confiscated. After a successful, yet unsanctioned, trial on a newly deceased animal, the team is ready to unveil their breakthrough to the world.
